March 2009 week 1

What a busy week! What with Zaphira’s Sylvia having her birthday, last minute dress rehearsals, the Herstmonceux Hafla and dance company rehearsal. Also, I have just confirmed that I will be opening the Lewes Arts Festival on Friday 10th April – please see the events page for more details!
Above is a pic of the Zaphira girls taken at the Herstmonceux Hafla on Saturday 7th March. This was the 4th hafla run by local troupe Uska Dara, who were raising funds for the Brighton Women’s refuge project, and was attended by local performers, teachers, students and their families from all over the South East of England from as far afield as Hastings and Croydon! Each year is a varied mix of performances from all dance levels where one can demonstrate their skills to a friendly and supportive audience. It also gives all us dancers a chance to catch up and meet with eachother a few times a year. My teachers Hossam and Serena were in attendance in support of Serena’a beginners class, Bonita from Uska Dara and myself, and Iris from Zaphira was present with husband Jay and baby Myst looking as cute as ever!!!
First up from my students was the intermediate level class, Il Nana, who performed a lively cane dance, (we were 4th in the programme). All the girls danced well, and our hard work had paid off. However, i would like to offer special congratulations to Fay and Danielle as this was their first performance with the group. Well done girls!
Zaphira were then set to open the 2nd set, despite bra tops “pinging” off, stitching coming undone – all minutes before the performance, we somehow managed to keep it together and keep out hair extentions in place! Uska Dara’s Bonita was fabulous as usual, i just love watching her dance!
Finally, after an interlude from local African Drummers “Tricky Beats”, I had my costume pinned in place to open the final set. It was a lovely evening, and i send out my thanks to Uska Dara and all the performers for giving us all a lovely night. Roll on the next one!!!!
Am absolutely exhausted now, particularly as me and Bonita and dance company rehearsal with Serena today and spent 6 hours dancing!!! It was brilliant though, i just need to sleep nowx

What an excellent night. Thoroughly enjoyed it..and exciting to say the least…crazy costume changes…costume malfunctions…nerves…giggles…last minute panic…and we all still managed to pull it off well! Bring on the next hafla! Sylvia
